Mark Cuban fires back at Deron Williams for his comments – NBA News
Mark Cuban is one of the most vocal NBA owners and anybody who has followed the Dallas Mavericks over the years would know that.
While many of the NBA owners prefer to stay in the background and let the front office handle the day to day affairs as well as media interactions, Cuban is an on the job owner, who travels with his team everywhere and is not one to shy away from commenting on any issue - literally. Hence, it was expected that Cuban would respond after the Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams said a few days ago that Cuban’s absence from a meeting in which the Mavericks front office tried to convince him to join their franchise during free agency helped him make his decision about opting to re-sign with the Brooklyn Nets.
And Cuban, who is currently in Spain with his Mavericks team who played a friendly exhibition game against FC Barcelona Regal on Tuesday night, took a shot back at Williams.
“I’m a big D-Will fan, but I’m kind of surprised that he would throw his front office under the bus like that by saying that I would make a difference. I would have expected him to say – like I’d expect one of our guys to say – ‘Hey I’m so thrilled with the front office and the moves we made and our team that it wouldn’t have mattered what he did.’ I’m flattered that he thought my presence would have made more of a difference than what the Nets’ management did,” said Cuban via the Dallas Morning News before the Mavericks game on Tuesday.
Williams was hunted by Cuban and the Mavericks in free agency this past summer and looked close to signing a deal with the team, but later decided to stay with the Brooklyn Nets after Billy King shared with him his plans of team building for the future.
D-Will looked to be leaning towards the Nets anyway during the later part of his free agency period, and was able to get a better deal with the Nets, who offered him a five year max deal compared with a four year offer by the Mavericks.
However, Williams thought Cuban should have been while Cuban thinks that should not have made a difference as the front office of the organization was well represented.
