Mark Davis Ousts Stephen Maguire in the last 32 round of Beijing World Snooker China Open 2011
Mark Davis beat Stephen Maguire by a frame score of 5-3 in the last-32 of Bank of Beijing World Snooker China Open 2011 held at Beijing Students University Gymnasium, Beijing, China.
The current world no.8, Maguire, who lifted the China Open’s trophy back in 2008, has crashed in the first round this year. However, Mark Davis on the same note produced a high standard game to see off the experienced Scottish. The overall score-line between
the players was 8-65, 101-11, 25-96, 41-66, 102-0, 62-20, 5-79 and 0-137.
First chance in the opening frame fell for Maguire but he gave an early chance after rolling in 8 points and was punished straight away by Davis, who fired up a classy break of 64 to have the first blood 1-0. However, Maguire showed no reeling effects and
responded with a carving break of 75 in the second to level the things at 1-1.
But he lost his nerves in the third frame, breaking down on 20 and when the chance presented itself, Davis slotted a magnificent break of 88 to wrap up the frame. He also took the following frame after a bout of safety play to lead his opponent by 3-1.
Maguire, who was trailing his opponent by 3-1, also bounced back, with all of his zeal, energy and strength, and won two frames in a row. He pocketed the fifth with a superb break of 97 and took the sixth frame with a couple of quick breaks, 30 and 28, to
level the things once again by 3-3.
It looked as if Maguire, with this confidence, was going to book a place in the last-16 but the tables were turned on him when the world no. 18, Davis, clinched the seventh and eighth frame with mind boggling breaks of 73 and 137 respectively.
The other players who have made it to the last-16 as of yet include Stephen Hendry, Stephen Lee and Neil Robertson who have emerged successfully after beating Matthew Stevens, Mark Williams and Barry Hawkins respectively.
