Mark Davis into semis after beating Martin Gould: 2012 Australian Goldfields Open – Snooker Update
Winner of the 2012 Six-Red World Championship snooker event, England’s Mark Davis made his way into the quarter-final stage of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament.
He put up an outstanding display during his second round clash against the former World Snooker Championship winner, Neil Robertson at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria. The Englishman was up against compatriot Martin Gould in the quarters.
The clash seemed a tough game in the beginning as both potters were fully aware of the pressure of the game as well as each other’s snooker abilities. Gould made it to the quarters after pushing China’s Cao Yupeng down in the second round by the score line
of 5-4. Despite the fact that he had to dig deep against the Chinese potter to hit the victory, the Englishman was confident against Davis.
However, on the other hand, Davis grabbed an easy win over Robertson which boosted his confidence to move forward and continue his good form in the event. As expected, Davis was tremendous at the baize against Gould and trashed him easily by the score line
of 5-2 to book his place in the semi-final stage of the tournament. Despite hard tries from Gould, Davis maintained his game-play and claimed the ultimate victory.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Davis said, “I got a great start. A 90-odd break in the first frame settled me down early on. I played pretty solid, I don't remember missing too much. A couple of the frames went scrappy after the interval,
you're never going to have big breaks when they go like that. But I'm very pleased again.”
The Six-Red World Champion hit first frame win with a tremendous knock of 92 to grab early lead with 1-0 score line. Before he could add more, Gould came back from behind and fired a superb half-century break of 52 to win the second frame and pull level
at 1-1. Davis came under pressure in the third frame and gave away the frame to slip 1-2 down.
However, a 54 from him in the fourth frame was enough to equalise the score at 2-2 before the finish of the first session of the match. After that, Davis did not let Gould create any trouble for him and cruised into three frame triumphs to confirm his dominance
in the game by 5-2.
