Mark DeRosa shines as San Francisco Giants defeat San Diego Padres 3-2 - MLB Update
San Francisco Giants’ pinch hitter, Mark DeRosa had a remarkable day with the bat as he hit a decisive RBI and went 1-for-3 with an average of .258 in the Giants’ 3-2 win against the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park, San Francisco on September 13.
Giants started extremely well as they scored their initial run in the first inning and got a 1-0 lead. Pablo Sandoval hit a single-run shot towards left-centre and Cody Ross contributed the first run for Giants. Carlos Beltran occupied third base to end
the first inning. The pitchers did not allow any run in the second and third innings.
James Darnell drove a single-run shot towards left-field but Cory Luebke struck-out while Will Venable and Jason Bartlett ground out without taking runs for the Padres. Similarly, Jeff Keppinger and Ross both ground out to short-stop position at the bottom
of third inning. Giants raised their lead 2-0 at the bottom of the fourth inning when Justin Christian singled off centre-field and Sandoval scored one run.
DeRosa said, “It's a tough situation, we all know that. We still want to keep playing hard and never forget we're the defending world champions. I sat there and watched the Braves win, Arizona won and the Cardinals won.”
Later on, Christian moved to second base on the error of Padres’ centre-fielder Cameron Maybin. The batters struggled in the fifth and sixth inning and failed to post even a single run. Giants’ starter, Matt Cain pitched beautifully as he threw just over
six innings and had six strike-outs with an ERA of 2.79. He surrendered one run, three walks, four hits and one earned run on his 106 pitches.
In the seventh inning, Padres got off the mark with two runs to level the game 2-2. Kyle Blanks and Aaron Cunningham both added two collective runs for the Padres when Bartlett doubled towards deep centre-field. Then, the game remained tied until the 11th
inning but at the bottom of 12th inning, Giants went ahead 3-2 when DeRosa hit a single-run drive to shallow centre-field and Ross posted the leading run. Sandoval moved to third base to end the final inning.
Consequently, Giants assured a 2-0 lead in the three-game series against the Padres at San Francisco.
