Mark Foster off to a good start
The day 1 of the Irish Open 2012 proceeds at the Royal Portrush golf club. This is the first Irish Open being held at Northern Ireland since 1953.
As expected there is a record crowd for any European Tour event. The crowd included First Minister Peter Robinson and his deputy Martin McGuinness.
Mark Foster had a great start on the first day of the Irish Open. He carded six impressive birdies in the first 10 holes.
After scoring his first six birdies in the first 10 holes, Foster scored another one on the 13th hole.
Foster’s perfect start was ruined, as he carded a bogey on the 15th. His game had no eagles or double bogeys, the rest were just pars. As a result, the English man finished his day 6-under par.
The-36-year-old has about 300 starts and among those 300 starts, he won only one title. Foster’s group included Padraig Harrington and the defending champion Simon Dyson. In the end Foster was able to manage a one stroke lead from both.
The 40-year-old Indian Jeev Milkha Singh is at the top at the moment. Milkha had seven birdies and the rest were pars. He was unable to manage any eagles.
Graeme McDowell, one of the three Irish men starring in the tournament teed off today. He was not able to manage a good start and did not perform as well as the home crowd had expected.
McDowell’s initial holes were quite well. He had scored 4 birdies and was three under par till the 16th hole. Later, the Northern Irish man carded a double bogey on the 17th, which made him finish at one-under par.
The other two Irish stars, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke will be starting later in the day, facing even windier conditions.
In an interview after the end of the first day, Foster said, "When we came to the course the rain was sideways and yet people were queuing to get in".
"It's amazing here and I've never heard a buzz about the course that there is in the players' lounge this week," he continued.
