Mark Gillan defends Pastor Maldonado after 2012 British Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Williams’ chief operations engineer, Mark Gillan has defended their driver, Pastor Maldonado after 2012 British Grand Prix held at Silverstone Circuit in which he collided with Sergio Perez of Sauber.
Maldonado had a clash with Perez when the Mexican driver tried to overtake around the Brooklands him during the race. Furthermore, it will be important to mention that both the drivers also had a collision during the free practice of the Monaco GP after
which the Venezuelan driver was even penalised.
Moreover, Perez could not score even a single point in the last race as he was retired. Afterwards, he called Maldonado a very dangerous driver on track and asserted that FIA should take action against him.
However, Gillan backed up their driver and discharged all the assertions against him. He also said that the clash in Silverstone was just a racing accident.
“We looked at it; in our opinion Perez squeezed Pastor,” Gillan said. “Pastor had inside line, he braked, he locked wheels and effectively grabbed car. You can see heavy twitch where he's fighting car and back end pushed right and hit Perez, so to me it
is a racing incident. I can't see anything in it myself. Pastor is a real fighter. He's quick, he's a robust person on track and we've had a few incidents in the last number of races. I think this was unfortunate but to me it's a racing incident. I can't see
anything in it.”
Besides, he said that the ongoing criticism will not affect the confidence of their competent driver while he said that they are positively looking forward to perform well in the approaching races.
At present, Maldonado is standing at 10th place in the drivers’ championship with 29 points. Additionally, he is just 2 points ahead of Paul di Resta of Force India and 10 points behind Perez.
It will be important to note that he claimed his maiden victory in the Spanish GP held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona after claiming his first ever pole position. Over and above, it will be interesting to see how he shows up in the forthcoming races.
