Mark Gillan insists tyre management is crucial for 2012 British Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Williams’ chief operations engineer, Mark Gillan has said that the tyre management is going to play a crucial role in 2012 British Grand Prix which is to be held at Silverstone Circuit on July 8.
Gillan insisted that the track of the next race is going to be quite challenging for all the contenders. However, he believed that they will hopefully be able to come up stronger in the approaching race as the tyre compounds which is going to be used in
Silverstone are the same which provided them an advantage in the Spanish GP.
“Silverstone is a great circuit, with the highest average corner speed of any circuit in the championship and is a good challenge for both the driver and car,” he said. “Pirelli bring their hard (prime) and soft (option) tyres to this race, which is the
same pairing that we used successfully in Barcelona,” Gillan said.
Pastor Maldonado of Williams took his maiden victory in the Spanish GP at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona after setting off from first grid position. Moreover, he claimed his team’s first victory since 2004 and became the first ever Venezuelan driver to
win a race in F1.
Even though, he has not been able to score even a single point in the last three races. Nevertheless, he is positively looking forward to perform well in the race ahead.
Meanwhile, Gillan said that they have been planning to launch some major updates regarding the aerodynamics of the car in the forthcoming race which will definitely provide help in attaining good results.
“We will also bring an updated aerodynamic package to the event which is imperative given the importance of aerodynamic efficiency around this track and how tight the grid is at present,” he said.
The British team is presently standing at 7th place in the constructors’ championship with 45 points. Besides, they are just 1 point ahead of Force India and 15 points behind Sauber Ferrari.
Williams have emerged as one of the most competitive midfield contenders in the season so far and it will be very interesting to see how they perform in the upcoming races.
