With QPR close to securing Inter Milan’s shot stopper Julio Cesar’s services, Mark Hughes believes that the controversial midfielder Joey Barton could well be on a move to Marseille in the coming days
The former captain at Loftus Road, has openly expressed his desire to make an impact in France but with a looming 12 match ban jeopardizing the season long deal for Barton, the midfielder revealed earlier that a move to Marseille looks set to be off.
However, the recent capture of Julio Cesar from Inter Milan has reignited Barton’s transfer speculation and according to the manager, a deal could well be in the making soon. Already the QPR boss had made enough signings this summer, and the sale of Barton
to Marseille could significantly reduce the wage bill.
Mark Hughes said, “The Marseille ordeal may not be dead in the water.” The boss also wants to respect the player’s desire as he added, “We might be able to get a solution for everybody. The option has attracted Joey’s enthusiasm so hopefully the deal is
concluded.”
The standoff between Mark Hughes and Joey Barton had jeopardised the English-born player’s long-term prospects at the London club. The player has openly admitted his enthusiasm at the prospect of playing in France.
Barton in a recent interview said, “When I was young, I supported Everton and every time PSG played Liverpool in the European Cup, I wanted them to win. However, I still have a lot of work to do here. But who knows what the future holds for me”.
According to the player’s agent Willie Mckay, “Joey wants to play in Marseille this season”. The agent added, “We are negotiating but nothing is done for now”. Mckay added, “I don’t want to comment with respect for the manager of Marseille, Jose Anigo, and
the President Vincent Labrune”.
Marseille has been hit hard by departures of players, particularly in the midfield. Subsequently, the club is keen on attaining the services of Barton.
However, the 12 match ban on the 29-year-old former Newcastle man has been deemed  as the point of contention for the concerned clubs, in particular Marseille, in concluding a deal.
