Mark Izturis helps Jerome Williams, as Los Angeles Angels beat Seattle Mariners 3-1 – MLB Update
Mark Izturis proved a relief generator for the Los Angeles Angels, as he took his club from behind to put into a winning position in the last moments of the game against the Seattle Mariners for a 3-1 close triumph at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Wednesday,
September 7 to snatch the series 2-1.
Angels’ starter Jerome Williams worked well for his third win of the season. He gave only one hit that went for the Mariners’ lead producing homer in the sixth inning. Williams crushed all the batters he faced with unplayable sliders, disturbing changeups
and struck-out five batters over an 84 pitches long eight innings.
"It's exciting to a point," Williams said. "I can't let all those emotions get to me when I go out there and pitch. We're in the hunt for the playoffs, and I've got to focus on getting wins. ... If I keep on putting up zeros, I'll keep the guys in the hunt."
Williams tossed 59 strikes and improved his record to 3-0 with a 3.51 ERA, winning all three starts he made in 2011 regular season. 29-year-old right-hand hurler has allowed only ten runs on 23 hits over 25 innings of three starts while having 19 strike-outs.
Although his performance was brilliant but a homer he gave in the sixth inning was about to send the Angels to severe trouble. Angels’ batting was struggling against the strong pitches of the Mariners’ starter Charlie Furbush, who held the Angels scoreless
in his first seven innings.
However, Mark Izturis proved strong in the eighth inning when he stroked a double to deep left-centre, allowing Erick Aybar and J. Moore to score. It took the Angels to a 2-1 lead and their manager looked relaxed. Then Peter Bourjos drove in a single to
centre-field for an RBI run to take the Angels into a 3-1 lead.
Jordan Walden, who has strong support of his manager, entered in the crucial time to defend the game decisive inning and came out with a smiling face. He did not net let the Mariners’ batters to touch even a single hit and struck-out one batter to record
his 29th save and to take the Angels into their 78th win.
The win has added little relief to the Angels’ bullpen who was under pressure after losing the second game with a 2-1 score.
