Mark J Williams leads Mark Allen, 11-5: 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship
Two-times world champion, Mark Williams, has ended his second session with an 11-5 lead over Mark Allen, in the best-of-twenty-five frames quarter-final match of the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, which is being staged at the Crucible
Theatre, Sheffield.
It was yet another impressive performance by the Welsh Potting Machine, as he showcased back-to-back century breaks of 104 and 113 for the audience. The Northern Ireland’s professional, Allen, however could only clinch two frames in the session.
The overall score-line between both the players was 73-66 (66) (re-spotted black), 73 (73)-59 (59), 7-123 (78), 125 (125)-0, 111 (78)-5, 70 (66)-60 (60), 23-115 (100), 0-111 (102), 88 (80)-36, 19-50, 66-45, 86 (80)-26, 51-82, 59-11, 116 (104)-0
and 113 (113)-22.
Williams, who ended his opening session with a 5-3 lead, stormed into the first three frames with a top break of 80 in the first frame to further extend his lead at 8-3. Though Allen had got frame-winning chances in all of the three frames, he
failed to capitalise on them.
Allen, somehow managed in winning the fourth frame with a superb break of 80 to trail 8-4 before the mid-session interval.
On resuming the game the first two frames were scrappy and both players shared a win each in them to make the score-line 9-5.
However, the last two frames were over within a blink of an eye, as the Welshman mopped up mind-boggling back-to-back century breaks of 104 and 113 in both the frames respectively to end his campaign with a commanding 11-5 lead over his opponent.
Williams, after this devastating performance now just needs only two more frames to book a place in the semi-finals for the first time in eight years, where he will face the winner of the match between John Higgins and Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Both the players will fight it out again in their third and final session today. All is left to see whether the Pistol, Mark Allen, is able to make a comeback against Williams, who certainly is looking in prime form.
