Mark J Williams loses to John Higgins in semi-final – 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship
Two-time Crucible winner, Mark J Williams, has lost his battle by a frame score of 17-14, in the semi-final of the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, after he was outplayed by John Higgins in the fourth session. This event is being held at the
Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.
World Number two, Williams, was pretty impressive in the first two sessions, as he held a two-frame lead throughout the match. However, in the third session things became different when the current World Number one, Higgins, bounced back into the game and
won six frames out of eight, to go in front by 13-11. Three-time World Champion, Higgins, then also dominated the fourth session to win the match, 17-14.
The overall score-line was 50-52; 139 (135)-0; 1-67; 19-73 (72); 76-44; 127 (120)-0; 16-74 (74); 0-74, 0-68 (39), 106 (84)-0, 0-115 (115), 70 (42)-62 (62), 0-103 (103), 0-58 (32), 65 (40)-62, 59 (42)-20, 64-44 (44), 1-75 (75), 61 (45)-24, 4-84 (39, 45),
70 (45)-0, 72-37, 56-34, 73 (49)-61 (61), 7-105 (105), 68 (32, 35)-0, 0-92 (92), 123 (123)-14, 24-89 (84), 70-40 and 67 (64)-64 (33).
The thirty-six-year Welshman, Williams, looked pretty impressive at the start of the session, as he dominated the first frame with a dazzling century break of 105, to come within one frame at 13-12. Williams did attempt for a 147 but unfortunately fouled
on the 14th black. However, his opponent restored his two frame lead at 14-12 in the following frame with ease.
Williams again closed up the gap in the twenty-seventh with a brilliant run of 92, before the Scottish professional reeled-off the next with a mind-boggling century break of 123.
After the mid-session interval, the tide turned as Williams knocked in a classy break of 84 to make the scores 15-14. The thirtieth frame was probably the scrappiest of the match. A bout of safety play was seen among the players, however, it was the Scot
who once again went ahead by two frames.
Williams tried his best to pull the match in the last frame but it was too late for him, as Higgins won the frame with a carving 64.
After the match, Williams, said, "I can't grumble and do much about the result. Whoever wins it deserves to win it, it doesn't make any difference to me."
Higgins will now play the rising star Judd Trump, in the final of this year’s Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.
