Mark J Williams ousts Ryan Day, 10-5 – 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Champion
Mark Williams has brushed Ryan Day aside by a frame score of 10-5 in the first round of the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, which is being staged at the Crucible Theatre,
Sheffield, England.
It was an all-Welsh battle between two very close friends off the table. However, Ryan Day, who beat Liu Chang in the final qualifying round, has fallen down in the last-32.
Mark Williams on the same note registered an impressive win over his fellow countryman. The overall score-line between both players was 61-37, 18-71, 75-7, 72-0, 66-51, 137-0, 39-79, 4-79, 87-1, 79-52, 45-56, 93-11, 71-8 and 87-32.
The opening frame was a scrappy affair. A bout of safety play was seen between the players but in the end it was the world number two, Williams, who came on the top to draw the first blood
1-0. Though Day levelled the things by 1-1 with a dominant break of 62 in the second, he lost the next four in a row. The Welsh Potting Machine, Mark Williams, bounced back into the game, with all of his zeal, energy and strength, and fired up classy breaks
of 45, 71, 46 and a mind-boggling match-highest century break of 137 respectively.
Meanwhile the Welsh Dynamite, Day, also clawed back with carving breaks of 79 and 63 in the seventh and eighth to reduce the deficit by 5-3, but another magnificent break of 84 in the
following ninth frame from Williams ended the first session with a 6-3 lead in his favour.
On resuming the play in the second session Williams clinched the first frame with a dominant break of 55 before Day pocketed the eleventh and twelfth to trail 7-5. He relied on his tactical
side instead of going for big breaks in these two frames.
It looked as if now there is going to be a close battle between the two Welshman but everyone was left flabbergasted when the thirty-six-year-old, Williams, completely turned the tables
over his opponent. He won the following thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth in a row to seal his victory. He also showcased marvellous breaks of 89, 70 and 66 in these three frames respectively.
Mark J Williams, who also is one of the tournament favourites, has now secured a place in the last-16 of this year’s Betfred.com World Snooker Champion. He will now face Jamie Cope in
his next round.
