Mark J Williams outplays Jamie Cope to reach the quarter-final – 2011 World Snooker Championship
Former Two-time World Champion, Mark Williams, has beaten Jamie Cope by a frame score of 13-4, in the best-of-25 second round match of the 2011 World Snooker Championship, held at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.
The twenty-five-year-old, Jamie Cope, who outplayed the Crucible debutant, Andrew Pagett, by a frame score of 10-7, has fallen down in the second round. World Number two, Williams, on the same note produced a high standard game to book a place in the quarter-finals
of the event, for the first time in five years.
The overall score line was 72-47, 81-0, 96-1, 65-16, 49-64, 69- 10, 61-37, 87-0, 0-96, 60-55, 77-41, 84-9, 106-0, 109-27, 22-74, 7-72 and 64-37.
Williams fired up modest breaks of 51, 72, 54, 37, 38 and 44 in the opening session to end his campaign with an impressive 7-1 lead. It could have been a white-wash, but the Welshman lost control of his emotions in the fifth frame, breaking down on 49.
World Number 15, Cope, dominated the first frame in the second session with a classy break of 96, but lost the following five frames. Williams, apart from marvellous back to back century breaks of 106 and 109, also showcased his flawless safety skills.
The match was almost through before an error-ridden Cope racked up frame-winning breaks of 72 and 74 in the last two frames respectively, to take the match into the third session. Despite Cope’s effort, thirty-six-year-old Williams killed the match by winning
the opening frame.
After the match, Cope admitted his mistakes in the match and said, "It was over after the first session and I just didn't play that well. I needed to do well at the start and Mark got away from me. I've felt I've been cueing as well as I have done and was
more confident than I had been in the last few months. Mark is playing as well as he can and he will go close to winning the tournament."
Mark Williams has now setup a potential clash with the Pistol, Mark Allen, in the quarter-final of the event which is going to take place on Tuesday, April 26.
