Mark J Williams regains his number one spot, John Higgins slips to second place – Snooker Update
Former two-time world champion, Mark J Williams, has regained his number one spot in the world rankings, for the upcoming 2011-12 season. It is the first time since 2003-04, that Williams has secured the top place.
Williams, who was previously ranked number two, won two ranking events over the past two seasons and then reached the semi-finals of this year’s Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, before losing out to John Higgins. The Welsh cueman, with his consistent
performances throughout the season has gathered a total of 60360 points, to clinch the top spot.
Scottish professional, John Higgins, who recently lifted his fourth Crucible Crown after beating Judd Trump, has slipped down to the number two spot in the world rankings. He won three ranking events this season, but has only been able to gather 58820 points.
The Wizard of Wishaw, John Higgins, could have been the number one, but his six months ban did not let him accumulate many points. He was banned for agreeing upon throwing frames intentionally in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport. The
news came up on the opening day of the final match of the 2010 World Snooker Championship, when the Scottish player was under criticism for fixing frames.
Bristolian Ace potter, Judd Trump, on the other hand has had a pretty good season. He was at the twenty-fifth
number spot before he won his first ever ranking event in China, to move up eleven places at the fourteenth number.
After his impressive wins over Neil Robertson, Martin Gould, Graeme Dott and Ding Junhui in the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, he has taken up the ninth spot in the world rankings. Trump, with his outstanding performance has gathered a total
of 41715 points.
Essex player, Ali Carter, has surpassed Shaun Murphy and Stephen Maguire with 47040 points to take the sixth spot in the world rankings.
Seven-time world champion, Stephen Hendry, has also retained his top 16 spot, which means that he will not have to be in the qualifying rounds of any tournament in the upcoming season.
