Mark O’Meara to miss the race for the Claret Jug
The stage is set for the best in the world of golf to go head to head to win the ultimate prize. The 2012 British Open Golf Championship is going to be held at the famous Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf club. The Open will start on the 15th of July
2012 and it will end on the 22nd of July 2012.
Last year the Claret Jug was bagged by Northern Irish professional golfer Darren Clarke at the Royal St George's Golf Club. He ended the tournament with a magnificent 5-under par.
In the tournament, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson were tied at the second position as both of them ended their final day with two-under par.
This year Darren Clarke will be looking to defend his title at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf club.
One player who will not be participating in the championship is Mark O’ Meara. He has withdrawn from the Open.
The reason that O’Meara has backed out from the event is that he is injured. Till now he has not revealed anything about his injury or its nature.
For this reason nothing certain can be said about when he is likely to heal and when he will be able to play his next tournament.
O’ Meara was considered as a strong contender for the trophy as he has won it before, in the year 1998 at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, where he was awarded with a cash prize of £300,000.
O’ Meara turned professional in the year 1980. In his career of 32 years, he has been able to bag 34 professional wins.
Out of these 34 wins, 16 came on the PGA Tour, 4 came on the European Tour, 2 came on the Japan Golf Tour and 2 came on the Championships Tour.
The 55-year-old is the oldest player to win two majors in a year. In the year 1998, he won the Masters in April and then again picked up a trophy at the Royal Birkdale.
The American professional golfer has not been replaced with any player in the championship because the Open already surpassed the 156-man limit.
