Mark Philippoussis thinks Bernard Tomic needs to improve his serve – Tennis News
Former Wimbledon finalist from Australia, Mark Philippoussis, has said that Bernard Tomic does not have enough firepower in his serve which could enable him to win the title at the All England Club this year.
Philippoussis is the last Australian to reach the title match at the Wimbledon Championships. He lost to Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, in the 2003 final.
The former Australian number one thinks that Tomic has such a tall height, he should have a huge serve, which will assist him in winning many free points.
Philippoussis said, “He's 6'4", 6'5" - he's got to have a bigger serve. He needs to have free points out there. You can't wait for someone to miss because these guys just don't miss anymore. So you need to have weapons to hurt
people and to get out of tough situations instead of grinding out of a point.”
Last year, Tomic became the youngest player to reach the Wimbledon Championships quarter-final since Boris Becker in 1985. Ranked, 27th in the world this week, the Australian will enter the All England Club as a seeded
player for the first time.
Philippoussis went on to say that, "He's got a good serve, but it's kind of a tricky serve. He paints the corners well, but he just needs to be a bigger server. There's no reason why he shouldn't be because he's a big guy. He just
doesn't utilise his body and his size at all on his serve, from what I see."
Tomic made his mark on the world tennis last year, as he stunned number of players at the All England Club. The Australian, who had entered the tournament as world number 158, upset former number three, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia,
in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round. After beating the 79th ranked, Igor Andreev, in the round of 64, the Australian produced the biggest surprise of the event, as he defeated the then world number five, Robin Soderling of Sweden,
in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 in the third round.
Tomic also cleared the fourth round by toppling Belgium’s Xavier Malisse but he fell at the hands of eventual champion, Novak Djokovic, in four sets 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 5-7 in the quarters.
Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will be favourites to win this year’s title. Tomic has never defeated anyone of these three so far in his career.
