Mark Ramprakash cautions at binge drinking in young county cricketers - Cricket News Update
Former England middle-order batsman, Mark Ramprakash, who recently retired from English county cricket after a 25-year long career, has warned the English authorities, regarding the greater exposure of fame and fortune among the young County cricketers,
wanting them to take appropriate measures.
He was speaking in the backdrop of a report which cited his former Surrey teammate Tom Maynard as having a night out before being killed in a morning accident.
The county veteran, who bid farewell last month, spent a considerable time in the county circuit and is a witness to the transformation that was brought about due to a steady flow of money, fearing it would cause more upcoming youngsters to lose focus from
the game.
“If you have a young player who’s showing a lot of promise but likes a night out, it’s not an easy issue to deal with – that’s where the senior players are very important in the dressing,” said Ramprakash.
Prior to the tragic death of Maynard, the young batsman was fined two weeks of his salary for breaking team discipline. Fellow http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rory-Hamilton-Brown-c2366, were also reprimanded for a similar offence.
The 42-year-old, who represented http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in 52 Tests, believes that while it’s a positive thing to be well paid, such an early exposure could make young minds vulnerable against the temptations of a dangerous lifestyle.
“If young players show promise they’re onto quite good salaries quite quickly. Young players now are rewarded very, very quickly from the age of 19, 20, 21 on the back of a few good innings. So how that translates into their lifestyles, well, it can be very
tempting for young men, if they’re earning a few quid to go out and enjoy themselves. You have to get the balance right.”
Earlier a leading English newspaper, The Sun had reported that Maynard, 23, had spent £450 on Vodka on the night of his accident and stayed for hours in a local bar in the London’s posh Mayfair area. He reportedly ran off on seeing a police car just moments
before his fatal accident.
