Mark Recchi impresses fitness coaches with level of commitment to personal fitness
At 42 years old, Boston Bruins forward Mark Recchi is still going strong. Recchi has always had the reputation of having a strong work ethic, a commitment to rigorous training regimes and doing whatever it takes to stay fit, and he's beginning to blow the
minds of health and fitness professionals.
"He's amazing. And he's a good guy, too," said Jeremy Frisch, a strength and conditioning coach for the last ten years who has been working with Recchi since the summer. "Guys should take notice that you can be in that type of shape at that age. You can
absolutely get in good shape if you train and focus."
In his 20 NHL seasons, Recchi has played for seven different teams and amassed over 1500 games, and is closing in on 1500 points. He is currently ranked 13th on the NHL all-time scoring chart and the leader amongst active players.
When Frisch began working with Recchi there weren't too many things he felt needed changing as they both have been advocates of sprint work – short bursts of speed for as little as 30 yards.
"If you are an athlete and you are not doing sprint work, you are missing the boat," Frisch said. "It is one of the most perfect exercises to get the body working properly. There is no exercise in the world that turns on more muscles in the body than sprinting."
Frisch has introduced a few exercises to Recchi's lower body regime, but is impressed overall with how Recchi conducts himself during training.
"Watching him train like that, a lot of young athletes should take note because that is how you should train," he said. "You should train in short bursts, high intensity and then rest and then do it over and over and over again. He does that. And I think
that is probably one of the reasons he has been in the League for so long."
