Mark Recchi reaches the 1,500 point plateau as Boston Bruins defeat Florida Panthers
The 2010-11 National Hockey League season has featured some milestone moments for several veteran players. Mark Recchi, currently the league’s elder statesman at age 42, was the latest
player to reach a milestone, as he earned his 1,500th career point in a 3-1 road win over the Florida Panthers.
How it happened
After a scoreless first period, Steve Reinprecht opened the scoring by firing a power wrist shot that beat Tim Thomas of the Bruins at 2:14 of the second period. The Cats’ lead would be
short-lived, as the Bruins would collectively roar to life in the third period.
Boston tied the game at a goal apiece with Brad Marchand scored a short-handed goal eight seconds into the third period. Mark Recchi then added his third goal of the season at 2:54, using
a wrist shot to get the puck past Tomas Vokoun. Recchi found the back of the net again at 16:00, beating Vokoun with another wrist shot to give the visitors a 3-1 lead and the win.
What they’re saying
No one was happier to get the win than Recchi, whose career has spanned four different decades. For the veteran right-winger, earning the win over the Panthers was just as big as the milestone
points that came with it.
“It’s pretty nice when it comes on a big win like that,” Recchi told reporters after the game. “You get the two goals, and it’s two important ones and that makes it even more special.”
Recchi’s goals helped Bruins goalie Tim Thomas earn his 11th win of the season. He was happy to have earned the win, as his team had put up a strong effort in front of him.
“It’s just a good situation for me right now,” Thomas said. “I’m getting a good effort in front of me, and just seeing the puck well and tonight was another example of that. It’s just
been a good run.”
The Panthers scored just one goal in the game, courtesy of Steve Reinprecht. However, when the Bruins tied the game in the third period, the Panthers could not find a way to respond with
some additional offence.
“They got a lucky break,” Weiss said of the B’s offensive outburst. “Then we had a little bit of a sag, and they get one right away. Then we didn’t have a response.”
Both teams will return to action on Friday 26 November. Boston will do battle with the Carolina Hurricanes, while Florida will take on the New York Rangers.
