Mark Reynolds homers twice as Baltimore Orioles rout New York Yankees 6-1 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles continued their excellent form as they outclassed the New York Yankees 6-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Friday, August 31 in the opening game of their three match series.
Chris Davis hit a sacrifice fly to left in the second inning to put Orioles on the board. Mark Reynolds homered to left in the second and J.J. Hardy added a solo home-run to left in the sixth to extend Orioles’ lead to5-0.
"Keep doubting, we don't care," Reynolds said with a smile on his face. "We're coming in, doing our jobs and doing the little things to win baseball games."
"You can tell, especially in this clubhouse, the quiet confidence that everyone has, expecting to win every night," Reynolds said. "So we're just going to keep riding this wave as long as it lasts."
Reynolds smacked his second home-run of the game in the ninth to give his side an impassable 6-0 lead. For the Yankees, Curtis Granderson homered to right centre but his effort could not save his team from a humiliating defeat.
Starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez had a memorable time on the mound as he did not give up any run in seven high quality innings to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the game. Relief pitchers Darren O’Day and Brian Matusz pitched two scoreless innings
to hold off the Yankees.
"I think the adrenaline gets me going, helps me out," said starting pitcher Gonzalez in a post game interview. "I just like pitching against a good offensive team, I guess."
It was a huge win for the Orioles who have surprised everyone with the quality of their play this year. Not many expected them to be 73-58 in first week of September before the start of the season.
A lot of credit goes to Manager Buck Showalter, who has used his pitching and batting resources perfectly this season. If Baltimore can maintain their impressive form over the next few weeks, they will have a great chance to win the American League East
Division title for the first time after almost a decade.
