Mark Sanchez to continue as New York Jets quarterback – NFL News
New York Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez has been coming under a lot of fire in recent weeks with his ability coming under question and calls to find a suitable replacement. There were even some who said that Sanchez was not the
long term answer to Jets woes.
After the Jets lost to the New York Giants, the criticism increased but Sanchez came out safe as coach Rex Ryan came to the defence of his player. Sanchez had forfeited turnovers three times in that game but Ryan reiterated strong
confidence in his player going to the extent of saying that he would prefer Sanchez over the likes of Peyton Manning, if he was to be available.
However, critics continued with their onslaught against the quarterback. Sanchez took to defending himself saying he was trying to be consistent but that consistency could not be seen in the last game against the Miami Dolphins
which saw the Jets being eliminated from the playoff race.
Much was being expected that it would be the last chance for Sanchez and along with the end to playoff hopes for the Jets will end Sanchez’s future with the Jets. The situation though proved to be otherwise. This time it was the
general manager Mike Tannenbaum who came out to support Sanchez.
“We’ll look at every position, if we can tweak or change it, and we’ll look at the quarterback position as a whole, but as far as the starter goes, it’s Mark. Mark’s body of work speaks for itself. Is it perfect? No. But his characteristics
are any GM’s dream. The guy really wants to be good and I think he’d be the first to tell you he needs to get better.” Tannenbaum said.
So those who wanted to see Peyton Manning instead of Sanchez will have to wait for a long time as Sanchez will continue to stay with Jets. The Jets have lost four of their last five games but the critics have now been silenced.
What goes wrong for Sanchez is that in this season he has lost four fumbles and has had 18 interceptions, a total of 22 turnovers. This can hardly be accounted for, even though Sanchez came up with his career best performance this season with regards to touchdowns
and yardage. Sanchez seems to realize that.
“I think we fell short of our expectations. Anytime that happens, you’re a little disappointed and you’re supposed to be,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez has claimed that he is improving and despite the GM’s support, critics will keep calling for him to be replaced.
