Mark Selby, Ali Carter represent England at World Trade Centre in Bangkok: World Cup Snooker 2011
Englishmen, Mark Selby and Ali Carter will be flying to Thailand this July where they will represent England in the 2011 World Cup Snooker. The mega event will commence from July 11 at the World Trade
Centre in Bangkok and will feature 40 players from 19 countries.
The pair was selected on the basis of merit and they will now represent England in the event. The 2011 World Cup Snooker is a two-man team event that will feature 20 teams representing 19 countries
from around the world. Thailand, as a host country, will play with two teams in the tournament.
The matches will be played on the round-robin basis, where a member in the team will play both members of the opponent team. World Cup Snooker 2011 is being sponsored by Thailand’s energy company,
ETT, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, EGAT.
While speaking to the media regarding his world cup ambitions, world number three Mark Selby said, “Most of the big sports have a World Cup event and it's great for snooker to have different tournaments
with different formats.”
He added, “It will be a different kind of pressure to an individual event because you're playing for your partner as well. I've played in tournaments in Thailand before and I've no doubt this one
will create a really good atmosphere.”
The 19 countries that will take part in the 2011 World Cup Snooker are Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Northern Ireland, Wales, China, Hong Kong, Ireland, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Scotland, England,
Thailand, Germany, Malta, UAE, Poland and Egypt.
Thailand is likely to be represented by James Wattana, Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon, Issara Kachaiwong and Noppon Saengkham in the event, while Wales might go with world number one Mark Williams and
Matthew Stevens.
Pakistan has selected National Champion, Shahid Aftab and the former Asian Champion, Muhammad Sajjad.
World Cup Snooker has returned to Thailand after 15 years. It is also being called the King’s Cup as it will be staged as a celebration of Thai King’s 84th birthday. The winning team will
grab a total prize money of £443,750.
