Mark Selby, Mark Williams fix a berth in quarter-finals of the 2011 Shanghai Masters tournament
The current world number 3 Mark Selby and the current world number 1 player Mark Williams reached the quarter-finals of the 2011 Bank of Communication Shanghai Masters tournament on Thursday.
Selby and Williams defeated Jamie Cope and Robert Milkins with a 5-0 and 5-1 score-line in best-of-nine frame matches respectively.
This event is currently underway at the Shanghai Grand Stage in Shanghai, China.
It was a dominant performance from the Jester from Leicester, Mark Selby, as he completely whitewashed the Shotgun, Jamie Cope, with a 5-0 frame score. The 28-year-old Selby also showcased classy breaks of 64, 110 and 70.
Cope had many chances during the first two frames but he failed to utilise them and Selby reckons that was the turning point.
“Jamie could have won either of the first two frames, but from 2-0 up I played really well,” said Selby, who has now won nine consecutive ranking matches. “In my first match here the balls were awkward and it was slow-moving, but today it was more open and
much easier.”
The other player who posted a win on the same day was former two-time World Champion Mark Williams, who is also known as the Welsh Potting Machine. Williams was also untroubled as he fired in carving breaks of 54, 57, 130 and 82 to oust Robert Milkins. Milkins
on the other hand was just able to avoid a whitewash.
The Welshman afterwards shared his feelings with the media. He said, “The conditions are sticky here which doesn't really suit me because I like to roll balls in rather than punch them. I'm not expecting too much but I'm trying not to let that put me off.
I'm just trying my best.”
Mark Williams will now face his fellow countrymen Matthew Stevens whereas Mark Selby has set up a match with the Magician, Shaun Murphy, in the quarter-finals.
