Mark Selby: Northern Ireland toughest opponents – 2011 World Cup Snooker
England's Mark Selby believes that his team's clash with the Northern Ireland team of Mark Allen and Gerard Greene will be the toughest out of all the games they've played. Selby along with his 2011
World Cup Snooker partner, Ali Carter, has taken two match victories, beating Brazil and Belgium respectively. Both Englishmen are looking forward for their clash with the Northern Irish team on Friday, July 15.
Team England is drawn in Group C against Belgium, Brazil, India and Northern Ireland. They have already defeated Brazil and Belgium in the first two games they featured in and now they look for a
spot in the quarter-final stage after they beat India on Thursday, July 14.
Selby and Carter played brilliantly in the opening match and defeated Brazil’s Fabio Luersen and Noel Rodrigues quite easily, by 4-1. The only frame they lost was in the doubles competition, while
they won their individual matches.
The English pair did however, face tough resistance in their second match against Belgians Bjorn Haneveer and Luca Brecel. The match ended in a decider frame that the English team eventually won.
England now lie in third place in the group with Northern Ireland and Belgium on first and second places respectively. The English pair will be meeting Northern Ireland in their last match on Friday, July 15.
While speaking to local media, Selby said, “At the end of the day we won and that's the important thing. It could've been a better score but the important thing is to get the win. It's a team game
and I played ok myself and there will be another time when I don't play well and Ali will do. If we win one more game with a big scoreline we will be in the quarter-finals with a game to spare.”
He added, “Northern Ireland our the toughest game but we played Brazil yesterday and they played some good snooker. In one-frame matches it's hard to pick a winner. From the start we looked at the
table and were confident of qualifying. We've played two games and won two games.”
The duo are one win away from reaching the quarter-finals, and the second favourite team from Group C to make it to the quarter-finals is Northern Irish team of Mark Allen and Gerard Greene.
