Mark Selby clinches 2011 Shanghai Masters trophy by beating Mark Williams – Snooker news
The Jester from Leicester, Mark Selby, has won the 2011 Shanghai Masters tournament, as he defeated his Welsh opponent Mark Williams by a frame score of 10-9 in a race-to-ten frame final match on September 11.
The 2011 Bank of Communication Shanghai Masters tournament which had a prize money of 65,000 pounds for the winner’s chest, was held at the Shanghai Grand Stage in Shanghai, China.
It was a superb performance from the 28-year-old Englishman, Selby, as he was trailing by 7-9 before he clawed his way back to beat Williams 10-9 in an epic final. For Williams, who was looking for his 19th ranking title
and seventh in Asia, it was a heartbreaking defeat.
Selby was leading Williams 7-5 before the Welsh Potting Machine stunned him by winning four frames in a row to go in front at 9-7.
The match was almost through at that point but Williams missed some easy opportunities and Selby, who was left down by two frames with three to play, punished him by winning all three frames straight.
This was Selby’s second ranking event’s win and with it, he has also clinched the number one spot in the world ranking.
“It's a big relief to win my second ranking title because I'd lost a few finals,” said Selby, who has also won the Masters twice and took the Wuxi Classic title earlier this season. “Every time I got to a final I came up against someone playing well. Tonight
I wasn't at my best but the luck went my way.”
A disappointed Williams on the same note also shared his feelings with the media afterwards. The 36-year-old Williams admitted he missed some easy opportunities and therefore he lost the match.
Williams remarked, “I played well in the first session and should have been 6-3 up. Tonight I struggled and made so many mistakes, but towards the end I got myself together again and Mark missed a few.”
