Mark Selby downs Ali Carter to capture 2011 Wuxi Classic crown – Snooker news
The Jester from Leicester, Mark Selby, has defeated his fellow countryman Ali Carter by a frame score of 9-7 in a best-of-seventeen final match of the 2011 Wuxi Classic tournament.
Wuxi Classic, which was the first televised event of this season, was being staged in China.
It was an accomplishing performance from the world number 3 Selby who previously shrugged off the Chinese national hero Ding Junhui in the semi-final.
It was a cutthroat competition between both players, as they ended the first session at 4-4. Meanwhile both Englishmen showcased classy breaks of 89, 92, 66, 90 and 72.
However, in the evening session, Selby was almost invincible. The Essex player, Carter, pocketed the first frame with a magnificent break of 84 to go in front at 5-4 before Selby bounced back into the game with all of his energy and won four frames in a
row to turn his one-frame deficit into a three-frame advantage at 8-5. He also enjoyed carving breaks of 71, 53 and 80 in the meanwhile.
The Captain, Carter, did claw his way back with top breaks of 94 and 99 but it proved useless as Selby finished the matters off with a quality break of 100 in the following 16th frame.
The delighted player afterwards shared his feelings with the media and said, “The first session was a bit scrappy and we both missed a few balls. Then I scored well in the evening session. I didn't really get a chance from 8-5 to 8-7 but I made a nice century
to close it out.”
This was not a ranking event but still the 28-year-old, Selby, who has won just one ranking event- the 2008 Welsh Open, stated it will be a confidence booster for him.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “It's a long time away from home but I felt this was a great event to play in and get some matches under my belt, and I've ended up winning it so I'm delighted. Last season I got pipped at the end of a couple of
tournaments so it's great to win a trophy so early this time.”
