Mark Selby dumps Mark King in round 2 of the 2011 Welsh Open – Snooker news
Mark Selby has beaten Mark King in round 2 of the 2011 Welsh Open with a frame score of 4-2 to reach the last 8.
It was a long battle although only six frames were played in total before the results came out.
Opening frame which took 44 minutes was taken by Mark King. He leaded Selby by 63-27 before bout of safety shots from Selby got him 9 fouls from his opponent but after potting four more a chance to King was given where he potted 26 more to win the
first 1-0.
Selby bounced back in the second frame making a break of 67 before he broke down but King could pot only 24 and another 16 from Selby levelled the scores 1-1. In the following frame, a lot of safety shots were played by both players when Selby again
got a chance and produced a break of 50 to lead King even ahead by 2-1.
In the fourth frame, Selby was again the first one to be among the balls but he did only 22 later on a break of 56 from King followed by another 26 which equalled the scores again by 2-2.
Fifth frame was won by Selby with breaks of 36 and 33 which left his opponent needing snooker a little later. Selby again doubled a red to clinch the victory 3-2. Selby was only one frame away in order to stand victorious.
Sixth frame also consisted of a lot of safety shots when finally Selby was able to produce a century, 102, from a fluked red sealing his win.
The overall score line between both players was 68-89, 83-24, 70-47, 27-98, 71-20, and 104-5.
First five frame played between both players looked a bit old fashioned as they had not produced any dominant breaks but rather were relying on their safety skills.
Selby later on insisted that the noise coming from the other table distracted them a bit. He said Ronnie always brings the crowd with him and on the top of it, three century breaks were produced in the opening three frames between Ronnie and Day.
Selby admitted that he was not able to get any rhythm and the balls were all over the table. He also said that sometimes when the balls are not letting you play, there is nothing you can do.
However, Selby did make it and is through to the quarter-final where he awaits the winner of Graeme Dott vs. Neil Robertson match on February 18, 2011.
