Mark Selby lauds Paul Hunter after winning Paul Hunter Classic tournament – Snooker news
The current world number three, Mark Selby, won the Paul Hunter Classic tournament after he defeated the former 2002 Benson & Hedges Championship winner, Mark Davis, by a frames score of 4-0 in a best-of-seven frames final match.
This event was the fourth of Players Tour Championship series and was being held at the Stadthalle Furth in Germany.
The Jester from Leicester, Mark Selby, who has won the Masters on two occasions and the Welsh Open, was presented the trophy by Paul Hunter’s father.
Therefore, Selby shared his feelings for the Late Paul Hunter, who died just before his 28th birthday because of his Neuroendocrine tumour.
Paul Hunter was widely known as the ‘Beckham of the Baize’ and also ‘The Man with the Golden cue’ because of his brilliant looks and game. Thus, Selby reckons naming such a tournament after Hunter’s name was a fitting tribute.
The 28-year-old from Leicester, Selby, told the media he never knew Paul personally but the things he has heard about Paul can easily make him say he was a great human being and a great talent.
“I didn’t get to know Paul personally but from what everyone said he was a great guy and one of the nicest players you could ever meet,” said Selby.
Paul Hunter during his life won Masters Championship thrice, winning the title on the deciding frame on all three occasions. Hence Selby believes Hunter’s death was a great loss to snooker.
While speaking on his inclusion, he stated, “His playing record speaks for itself and he was a class act. I picked up the trophy off of Paul’s dad and you could see him welling up a bit. We all still miss Paul.”
In the end Selby, who recently won the Wuxi classic tournament, talked about his game. He remarked winning the Wuxi Classic tournament in China was a real confidence booster for him which has helped him getting back on the track.
Selby claimed, “Winning Wuxi was great and I had a decent run in Australia (at the Australian Open) getting to the quarter-final. This puts me back on track but I just have to maintain it now. I’ve just been practising harder and harder.”
