Mark Selby ousts Joe Perry in round 1 to set up Mark Davis clash: 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
England’s Mark Selby has cruised into the second round of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open, beating compatriot Joe Perry with a comprehensive scoreline of 5-3 at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria.
Selby came back strong from nowhere to completely unsettle his opponent. The Englishman will next meet Mark Davis in the second round on Thursday, July 21.
The Jester from Leicester has been performing consistently since the beginning of 2011-12 Snooker Season. He had a strong run in the 2011 World Cup Snooker at Bangkok Convention Centre in Thailand
along with his teammate Ali Carter. Despite their defeat in the quarter-finals at the hands of Hong Kong, they were happy with their performance in Thailand.
The 28-year-old Selby flew to Australia with hopes of clinching the Aussie tournament title, as he said earlier before the start of 2011-12 Snooker Season. He played Joe Perry in his opening match
where he tumbled down to Perry in the first three frames and trailed 0-3. He was 13-68 down to his opponent when he sprang back into the game and won the match 5-3.
Speaking to the local reporters after his stunning comeback victory, Selby said, “Joe was brilliant in the first three and a half frames and I should've gone 4-0 down. If I had then I would've been
out of the tournament. But I managed to grind myself back into it. The interval works both ways and for Joe it came at the wrong time but for me it came at the right time.”
The former Welsh Open champion added, “I didn't do that much wrong in the first four frames and if had been 4-0 then I couldn't have had any complaints as Joe was the better player. It could've been
5-0. The fourth frame was a big one for me and the match changed after the interval. It's my first time in Australia and I never thought my first time here would be to play in a snooker tournament.”
Selby, also known as Mark the Shark, will next meet Mark Davis in his second round match.
