Mark Selby surges into Round 2 beating China’s Lu Ning in 2012 World Open
World Number one fought back to clinch the victory against the young Chinese potter, Lu Ning by the score line of 5-3 at Haikou Stadium arena in Hainan.
Selby’s snooker skills were put to the test by the 18-year-old Chinese cueman in the first session when he grabbed first two frames to lead the competition 0-2. The second frame took 30 minutes to finish as both players were struggling hard to get a lead.
However, they provided the crowd with some outstanding display of snooker genius.
Selby came back from 0-2 to pull level at 2-2 after he smashed a couple of decent knocks including a century break of 108. After the interval, the Chinese got the lead again at 2-3 with the help of a small run of 41 points. That was his final blow to the
Jester from Leicester and after that, he was not able to add more to his side of the score board.
After five frames, the match became all-Selby show as the former World Snooker Championship finalist stormed into three consecutive frame victories to win the match by 5-3 and place himself in the entrants of second round.
Speaking to the World Snooker after his success, Selby spoke, “The game was tough and I'd never seen Lu play before so didn't know what to expect but he's got a good game, a great future and he put me under pressure today. I don't think I played fantastic
but he gave me some chances.”
Meanwhile, the former World Snooker Champion, Australia’s Neil Robertson prevailed against the veteran champion, Scotland’s Stephen Hendry by the score line of 5-3 in their initial round encounter. The Aussie played sensibly against the former seven-time
World Snooker Champion because he knew that a little mistake will cause him his match.
He took control over the game in the very first session with a 3-1 lead. Hendry tried to stop his run with back-to-back set wins but they did not help him much and he slipped a couple of frames down to the Thunder from Down Under. With this win, Robertson
avenged his defeat at the hands of Hendry in the 2012 Welsh Open.
