Mark Shelley Alcala claims Men’s Singles U17 crown at Swiss Junior Int 2012 – Badminton news
Mark Shelley Alcala, one of the most talented shuttlers from Philippines, proved his mettle on court and surprised everyone by grabbing Men’s Singles U17 title at Swiss Junior Int 2012, on Sunday, September 30, in Switzerland.
In the final match, Alcala played with impressive speed and defeated his higher ranked opponent Sean Vendy of England in a striking fashion.
The un-seeded Alcala, who has been struggling hard to get a breakthrough at international stage, displayed his elevated skills on court and stamped his mark over Vendy who was the top seed in main draw of the championship.
Alcala was impressive in his play as he proved that he has made a lot of improvement in all aspects of his game and wrapped up victory by ending up the final battle in three games by taking 37 minutes on court.
The top seeded Vendy, on the other hand, played with tremendous precision in the first game but failed to maintain pressure on Alcala in the following sets and bowed down in three sets without proving his mettle.
In the starting set of the contest, Alcala was shocked with the severe treatment he received from his English challenger who was everywhere on court.
Alcala tried to play positive badminton but failed to put up strong show. He lost his focus at 3-4 and conceded 17 points in a row and eventually lost the game with a one-sided 3-21 score on the board.
However, Alcala bounced back into the match by putting up spectacular show in the second game as he played attacking badminton and took a comfortable lead until the break.
After the interval, Alcala continued executing his powerful shots in all areas of his rival’s court and managed to grab the game with a stunning difference of 21-8.
In the final set, Alcala again was on driving seat as he established a reasonable lead of 11-7 until the one-minute break.
The lower ranked Alcala continued showing his aggression to his English challenger on court and ended up the set in a controlled fashion with a lopsided margin of 21-12.
Alcala emerged as the crown winner as he finished up the final showdown in three games with an interesting 3-21, 21-8 and 21-12 margin on the board.
