Mark Steinberg and Tiger Woods to join Excel Sports Management Company
After churning out considerable hue and cry over whether Tiger Woods will be appearing in an interview at the Golf Channel, the rumours gradually died down on Monday morning when Woods' agent Mark Steinberg issued a statement that Woods will not be announcing
anything, let alone appearing in any interview on Monday morning, July 11.
Steinberg, however, did reveal some of the recent developments regarding his switching lanes along with his boss and signing a new contract with the Excel Sports Management company.
The sports journalists of several media associations were baffled by the rumours breaking in that Woods will be making a major announcement in his appearance at Golf Channel and some even went over to speculate a possible retirement of the great golfer.
Steinberg further elaborated on his statement and said that the anticipated announcement was about Woods rather than by Woods.
Steinberg told The Associated Press on Monday, “There’s an erroneous report that he’s making an announcement, but he’s not.”
Speaking regarding his new engagement with the Excel Sports Management, Steinberg added, “I’ve known Jeff and Casey for close to 20 years. We grew up in the business together and I truly felt Excel was a perfect fit. We intend to be a multi-sport agency
that is an ideal destination for top clients and corporations.”
Steinberg had been associated with the International Sports Management (IMG) for the last two decades and served as Woods' agent in the last ten years of his career with IMG. After the 14-major champion started to drop down in the rankings with his deteriorating
form and his preposterous s*x scandals, IMG kept a close eye on Steinberg’s performance. The company waited for Steinberg’s contract to expire and refused to give him further extension although being well aware of the fact that with Steinberg’s departure,
Woods probably would follow his agent.
IMG board of directors reasoned that Steinberg has become more of a liability for the company in the last few months and had not been able to draw in enough capital as was generally expected from him. IMG officials although showed their interest to get along
with Woods, but the veteran decided otherwise, parting ways with the company soon after.
Despite of his lingering injuries and an extended break from the mainstream sport, Woods remains as one of the most celebrated sportsmen of not just golf but of all the major sports played across the globe. He had been facing a left knee ligament fracture
and Achilles in both legs.
As the speculations mount about his golf engagements for the rests of the current season, Woods has decided to stay away from the limelight, keeping a low profile for the moment. He appeared at the AT&T National Championship on PGA Tour last week of which
he has been an unofficial host and announced that he will not be part of the field at the Open Championship as per advice of his doctors.
