Mark Teixeira’s homers helps New York Yankees defeat Los Angeles Angels 5-3 - MLB Update
Mark Teixeira launched a splendid homer as the New York Yankees defeat Los Angeles Angels 5-3 to clinch third outing of the series at Angel Stadium, Anaheim on Sunday, June 5.
After a scoreless first inning, the Yankees bat started swinging until they confirmed their win in the series 2-1. Brett Gardner led the game with an RBI single off the Angels’ starter Joel Pineiro. Then in the third inning, Teixeira followed Gardner with
a dazzling 386-feet long one-run homer to gain a strong hold over the game.
The Angels’ Mark Trumbo helped his club tie the game at two-all. Trumbo kicked the game off for the Angels with a striking 429-feet long one-run homer off the Yankees’ starter Bartolo Colon. Then, Mark Izturis hit a sacrifice fly to balance the game at two-all.
The Yankees struggled in the fourth inning against Pineiro, who after allowing a single to Jorge Posada got Gardner on a fly out. In the fifth inning, he failed to restrict Teixeira from launching a devastating 398-feet long two-run homer over right-field.

The Angels were not ready to let the game go away so easily, as Erick Aybar trimmed the lead to 3-4 touching an RBI single after Izturis occupied second base with a line drive double in the fifth inning.
As the game might stumble to either side, both starters realised the situation and strived hard to restrict the opposite offence scoreless. Pineiro threw a strong six and seven inning to provide some relief to his batters, who remained unable to take advantage.
Colon did the same in the sixth inning to end his spell with three allowed runs, two allowed walks and he made four strike-outs to give the later pitchers some strong momentum. David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain each followed the same path set by Colon
and held the Angels scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings.
By this time Nick Swisher launched the third homer of the game off Angels’ reliever Kevin Jepsen to confirm the Yankees 33rd win in the 2011 Major League Baseball season. Closer Mariano Rivera tossed a perfect ninth inning to gain his 16th save of the season.
The Angels’ Hisanori Takahashi and Trevor Bell did not allowed any run over small spells but were helpless to take the game back to their side.
