Mark Trumbo continues to reel in popularity as hitter climbs to 27 homers this season
There is nothing better than a good rookie who plays like a true professional. Los Angeles Angels owe a lot of their wins to Mark Trumbo and manager Mike Scioscia knows it better than any other man in the club.
The hard hitter was on his toes again as he reeled in the fans’ appreciation with the 27th homer of the season against the Oakland Athletics, on Wednesday, September 14 at Oakland Coliseum as the visitors won the game 4-1.
Howard Kendrick smashed two homers yesterday, against the A’s and he complemented the Angels’ rookie by claiming he hit like him. Trumbo however was back on his first base position again and he displayed his prowess with the bat as he led a homer against
A’s starter, Rich Harden in the top sixth.
The rookie star was not done there as he later returned in the top eighth to steal the second base against bullpen pitcher, Craig Breslow.
Trumbo has featured in 139 games so far and his homer count has gone up to 27. His on-base plus slugging percentage is .773 and his hitting average is .256. The one thing the Angels know about their rising star is that he deserves recognition in the Major
League circuit.
"He's going to have to get Rookie of the Year consideration," Scioscia said of the first baseman. "If we reach our goal, he has to get some MVP consideration.
"If we take him out of our lineup, we're not even in a pennant race this year. When you talk about one guy's impact on a team, Mark's up there."
When the hard hitter was told of his manager’s opinion, he was caught off-guard by the statement.
"It's flattering," Trumbo said, "but my whole focus now is on winning the [AL] West. I'm not thinking about anything else."
The Texas Rangers sit on top of the table and if Trumbo wants to get a win in the division, he will need his team to gain a lead on their opponents. At the moment, they are three wins behind the Rangers.
