Mark Tullo misses an opportunity to record a victory at the Madeira Islands Open – Golf news
Mark Tullo missed on a chance of winning the Madeira Islands Open, after he failed to post a challenging score on day four – he carded a one-under par 71 – to finish tied second on the leader board, on Sunday, May 19, 2013.
Having started the day one shot ahead of the eventual winner Peter Uihlеin, Tullо got off to a bad start by conceding a bogey on the third hole. He atoned for that blemish with an amazing hole-in-one, as he found the cup with an еight iron tee shot at the 201 yards fourth hole.
After losing another shot on the fifth hole, Tullo bounced back again with two consecutive birdies on the sixth and the seventh hole. However, the Santiago native failed to maintain consistency in his game and lost two more shots, while draining just one birdie putt on the back nine of the course.
At the end of the day, he found himself finishing two strokes behind Uihlein, who fired a four-under par 68, to record his maiden European Tour title victory.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his disappointment on not recording a victory in the tournament. At the same time, he was happy with his performance throughout the event, which allowed him to register his second top-five finish of the 2013 European Tour season.
“It was a very positive week,” said the Santiago native. “I could have won this tournament. I had three bogeys from 100 yards today which hurt a lot, but hats off to Peter. He played really on the back nine and that’s what you need to do to win tournaments.”
“I didn’t do that but it was very close and that’s a positive. Maybe there’s something further along the road for me in a big tournament,” he added.
Morten Ørum Maden was the other man who finished tied for the second place on the leader board. Entering the final hole on day four, Madsen was sharing the lead and only need to record a par putt to force the game to enter into the sudden-death playoffs. However, he failed to hold his nerves and faltered for a double bogey, which forced him to finish two strokes behind Uihlein.
