mark twain said he did not enjoy writing, he enjoyed having written. what does that mean and how does it relate to the writing process?

  1. I think it means that he enjoyed having finished work. You get a feeling of accomplishment when the thing you spent so much time crafting is finally finished. Like giving birth to a baby (w/o the mess and pain and with a lot more screaming :P) It relates to the process of writing in that it is the end product of the writing process; the satisfaction from a job well done, if you get what I mean. I'm sorry, it's hard for me to explain it :( I hope that helped you some though.

I guess what he means is, writing takes time and a lot of effort making it unenjoyable.  In the writing process: you have to come up with ideas, you have to arrange your ideas effectively to make your point cohesive and coherent. In the process, it takes a lot of frustrations such as writer's block that sometimes you feel like you have just hit a quagmire and you should just give up. But after completion your work itself brings the relief and ENJOYMENT. It gives you restitution (the rewards and sense of accomplishment) of why you wrote and experienced the rigors of the writing process in the first place.
