Mark Webber: If KERS ready for Turkey, Red Bull will beat McLaren – Formula 1 news
The Australian driver Mark Webber thinks that if the Kinetic Energy Recovery System is ready for 2011 Turkish Grand Prix, Red Bull will throw off McLaren from the top stair of the podium.
The Aussie commented that 80bhp boost of KERS is going to play a key role in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Webber’s RB7 once again malfunctioned in China when he had to do almost 30 laps without the KERS booster. Webber’s teammate Sebastian Vettel also faced a KERS failure due to which he was unable to hold on to his race lead against the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton.
Webber did a remarkable job in China when he overtook 15 cars without having the KERS booster, but the Aussie still thinks that it will be vital against McLaren team.
“It's a key component in F1 this year and Red Bull Racing are not out of the woods with our system yet. The 80bhp boost that the system gives you for 6.6s per lap, I had to race without it from lap 24 on Sunday,” explained Webber emphasising its need in
the upcoming Grands Prix.
“If we can get the system reliable in time for Istanbul, we'll head to the race with confidence. The RB7 is already a great car and we'll be looking to put McLaren back in their place after Lewis Hamilton's victory in China,” added Webber.
Although the KERS has not been as beneficial as some of the other 2011 innovations like the Drag reduction System and Pirelli tyres have been.
Talking about his performance in the Chinese Grand prix, Webber commented that he never thought that Vettel was so close in front of him after starting from the pole position. The Aussie praised his team’s pit-stop times and added that both Red Bull cars
on podium was not a bad result by the team.
The next race will be contested three weeks from now as Red Bull strive to correct the last piece of puzzle in their car, the KERS.
