Mark Webber: Monaco Grand Prix could be the most complicated race this season – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team driver Mark Webber has said that the Monaco Grand Prix could be 2011 Formula 1 season’s most complicated race yet in terms of strategy.
“We know this is one of the most prestigious races of the year. There are a lot of question marks going into this year's race in terms of how the tyres will be and the strategy could be the most complicated of the year,” said Webber.
The upcoming race at Monte Carlo is expected to take place this weekend and since the new Pirelli tyres degrade more quickly as compared to the Bridgestones of last year resulting in more pit stops, it seems that the Monaco Grand Prix is going to be one
of the most unpredictable races as well due to its technicalities.
The main thing about race strategy for teams is that they would have to decide the number of pit stops they are going to go for this weekend and more importantly, when they decide to take those stops during the race.
Webber as a result believes that apart from overtaking, race strategy is going to be a vital part of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.
“It's clearly a demanding street circuit, which requires incredible concentration and composure for the drivers throughout the weekend, starting with Thursday's practice sessions. The dramatic coast line and cliffs make an incredible backdrop to one of the
most famous tracks in the world - it's clearly like no other circuit we race at,” said the Red Bull Racing team driver.
He added that that track is unique and requires full concentration from each driver starting from the first lap of the first free practice session on Thursday.
Webber scored his first pole position of the 2011 Formula 1 season but unfortunately, failed to take the advantage as he finished behind the two McLaren drivers in 4th place but ahead of a strong looking Fernando Alonso.
His teammate Sebastian Vettel on the other hand took his 4th victory of the season and is now leading the drivers’ standings with 118 points.
