Mark Webber: Sebastian Vettel’s second place at Chinese Grand Prix helpful for team – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing Team driver Mark Webber has said that his teammate Sebastian Vettel’s second place finish at the Chinese Grand Prix 2011 is useful for the team in terms of their position in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.
“Congratulations to Lewis, it's good that someone finally … of course Seb's in the same team, but he's been at the front all along and we're all fighting for the championship. So a shame that McLaren won in a way, but also we can't let Seb get too far away,
so it was a good day for the racing and a good day for points for our team,” said Webber.
Vettel was on fire for the first two races of the 2011 Formula 1 season as he took two pole positions and followed them up with wins at the Australian Grand Prix and Malaysian Grand Prix.
However, after the Chinese Grand Prix, McLaren have proved that they have the ability to challenge the pace of Red Bull Racing Team.
Mark Webber finished the Chinese Grand Prix in 3rd place to complete the podium and it was a very good result after a terrible qualifying as he started from 18th place on the grid.
Webber claims that the main reason for his success at the Chinese GP was his strategy as he used his softer tyres which he had saved by not taking part in the Q2 and Q3 sessions during the qualifying round.
“It was an interesting grand prix. We decided to start on the hard tyres in the first stint, which we know is not the most desirable tyre for everyone in the field because it doesn't really have the characteristics of a hard tyre in terms of duration sometimes,”
added Webber.
The Aussie is now 31 points adrift of the drivers’ standings leader Sebastian Vettel but after scoring his first podium of the season, it seems that he is now more confident about the upcoming races of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
