Mark Webber admits Red Bull surprised to finish ahead of McLarens – Formula 1 news
Mark Webber has admitted that the team is surprised at taking its first pole position of the season.
Sebastian Vettel drove well to secure his and Red Bull’s first pole and Webber has revealed that the camp was not expecting the result they got out of the qualifiers.
Lewis Hamilton came in second to Vettel with Mark Webber placed in third and Jenson Button at fourth. The race is all set for an intriguing battle between the Red Bull’s and the McLaren’s. Although Vettel and Webber find themselves slightly ahead of the
McLaren drivers, yet Button and Hamilton will feel confident and hold an edge over the Red Bulls going into the race.
McLaren has so far shown that they are the leading team in the season as their car has shown the most pace and reliability. While Red Bull has struggled to show the same impact they had in 2011.
“There's been some big gaps to the opposition on a Saturday in particular so I think we're pretty surprised to be as competitive as we are on a track which is demanding probably not some of our strengths,” Webber said.
Webber also said that he could have been quicker at the qualifiers if he had been running second on the track. But. Paul di Resta was on track during his final run, the Aussie was hampered by his presence on the track but that is all part of the sport.
“I didn't leave enough of a gap to Paul [di Resta] actually. I was surprised how much I closed on him and I got him a little bit in 13 so lost a little bit there, but that was the only thing I would have liked to have done better; to have given him a better
gap. But in the end, we are here (in the top three),” Webber said.
He felt that it is beneficial for a driver he can go a bit later rather than taking turns at each race and the Sakhir track was very sensitive to this situation all weekend. Sebastian Vettel has finished at the front and the team feels confident going into
the race.
