Mark Webber against Bernie Ecclestone’s idea of artificial rain – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber recently stated that Bernie Ecclestone idea of creating artificial rain by the use of sprinkler systems during the races in the near future was not right.
This idea was proposed by Bernie in order to make Formula 1 more entertaining in the near future. According to the statistics, fans enjoy wet races more than dry races and if the FIA can control the weather conditions at some of the venues, then racing would
become more dramatic and exhilarating indeed.
Bernie stated that the FIA would have to make some specific rules and regulations regarding this whole idea if it comes to life though in order to make racing fair.
On the other hand, Red Bull Racing Team’s Mark Webber thinks that such an idea would make a mockery of the sport and its history.
“It can be more exciting when we have some different weather conditions, that does happen. But you just think of Jimmy Clark, Jackie Stewart, (Ayrton) Senna and those guys - masters in the wet. Jackie's still here, but the other two would be turning in their
graves if they thought we'd have sprinklers and hoses lined up around the track,” he admitted to the media.
Other than that, it is going to be “artificial rain”. No matter how hard the FIA tries, they cannot make a system which is going to be anywhere close to the natural wet conditions during a race. As a result, the experience of a natural wet race is going
to be compromised as well.
“It wouldn't be the most sophisticated way to make the show more entertaining,” Mark added.
If the FIA does come up with a very efficient way of creating “artificial rain” and a fair set of rules and regulations regarding this rule, then it would definitely make racing more exciting but it would still take away the “charm” of a wet race and as
a result, wet races will become boring as well.
