Mark Webber believes Fernando Alonso couldn’t have achieved more – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has also praised the performance of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and said that the Spaniard couldn’t have achieved more in the 2012 Formula 1 season.
The Scarlet team struggled with the design of F2012 throughout the pre-season testing programme. Furthermore, their technical director, Pat Fry entirely ruled out the probability of a podium finish in the season opener and projected to face difficulties
in the opening few races.
Nonetheless, Alonso performed tremendously well even with an incompetent car and attained remarkable results throughout the season with admirable consistency. Moreover, he also led the drivers’ championship for a long time in this season.
However, he lost the championship title only by three points to Webber’s teammate, Sebastian Vettel who performed inspiringly well with the fastest car during the last few races.
The Australian driver expressed that the 31-year-old has performed flawlessly in this season and has achieved so much even with the uncompetitive car.
“I don't think he put a wheel wrong all year,” Webber is quoted as saying by Autosport. “That's the reason I think he's so disappointed. He felt he probably did everything he could.”
Besides, he insisted that the two-time world champion couldn’t have done much more in this season as he lost the championship title by just 3 points.
“Was it his best season ever in terms of what he did? It could well be. He couldn't have done much more. To still miss out by just three points, it was lucky I passed him at Silverstone...” added the veteran.
On the other hand, Vettel, who won his third consecutive world championship title in this season and became the youngest triple world champion, also said that he really respects Alonso and called him one of the best drivers in the sport.
“I respect him as a driver for the fact he is fighting and he is one of the best drivers we have in F1, but you look after yourself,” said Vettel.
Additionally, the veteran German driver said that he is very happy to claim his third title and is now looking forward to come up even stronger in the future.
