Mark Webber blames poor start for second position finish at Korean GP – Formula 1 news
Mark Webber of the Red Bull Racing team admitted that his poor start was the reason he finished second at the Korean Grand Prix.
Webber, who qualified first and scored the pole position for Red Bull instead of teammate Sebastian Vettel, could not keep up the same pace at the race on Sunday and finished at second position after Vettel.
Vettel beat him at pace around turn one and Webber failed to regain his first position after that.
Vettel remained in lead of the race while all others on the field had been battling tyre problems. Webber confessed about having a sluggish start due to which he remained in second position.
“The start wasn't sensational, I'll have to look in to it but the initial getaway wasn't too great,” Webber said. “It's not the best corner to lead off so I thought 'OK we won't risk too much in the first corner' and then I got a good slipstream off Sebastian
but it was just neck-and-neck for us along the back straight. Then after that I just tried to hang in the best I could.”
Tyre wear problem had been very common among the drivers in the race on Sunday. Webber also confessed to having similar problems. Although, teammate Vettel had been dealing similarly but after the race, he stated that he had taken the problem under control.
Vettel was being continuously warned to watch his front right tyre over radio by his race engineer. Webber added that tyres kept making the driving difficult for him and he was only in control in the last stint.
He complained about watching his front tyres at the end of each stint and said that it had been hard to keep the front right in check. The first two stints happened to be difficult for Webber but he became comfortable in the last one but it had been two
late by then.
During the press conference after the race, he congratulated Vettel on his win and said that it was a good day for the team.
“Of course I'm disappointed but I'm happy to get a good result on the other side as well,” he added.
