Mark Webber confident ahead of the season finale
Mark Webber, the Red Bull driver who leads the F1 driver’s championship table with 4 races to go, admits that Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has the edge and the momentum going into the season finale.
Webber is 11 points ahead of Alonso as the formula one circuit moves to Japan. Fernando Alonso has won 3 of last 5 races and Webber believes that momentum does count a lot in formula one.
Webber however was confident that he can hold his own at Japan, he said that in the past he has enjoyed driving at Suzuka circuit and there is no need to panic for him or his team. He admitted that winning 2 races back to back
would give Alonso some advantage but still he is confident that he can still hold the Ferrari rival off.
"Yes, they have had two wins on the bounce and they are looking good," said Australia's Webber, 34.
"But we did well at Suzuka last year and the point’s situation is pretty open. Anything can still happen."
Mark Webber, who dominated the early part of the season along with his team mate Sebastian Vettel, said that he would have to a bit cautious in the final 4 races. Webber is currently leading the table, chased closely by Alonso
who is on 2nd 11 points behind him. Former world champion Lewis Hamilton is further behind in 3rdplace 20 points adrift of Webber and behind him is the 2nd Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel 21 points behind.
The Australian said that it is good to have some breathing space at top of the table, but that does not mean that he can take it easy. Webber said that new points system means that once inspirational race or one bad weekend can
change the whole picture. He said that earlier there were some problems in the camp regarding who is the best candidate for the title. But now there are no doubts. Webber was referring to the infamous front wing incident that took place just before the summer
break.
Just moments before the race began; a front wing was taken off from Webber’s car and fitted onto Vettel’s car. Mark Webber was understandably outraged and ironically ended up winning the race. Team boss Christian Horner explained
his actions by saying that it was a team decision and they thought that at the time Vettel was the man with better chance of winning the title. When Webber won the race, he sarcastically said on the team radio “Not bad for a number 2 driver yeah! “
The situation was later worked out by the team, and things are back to normal according to Webber. That was not the first time problems had been reported between the team mates.
In the Turkish Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel in an effort to move ahead ran into Webber’s car. Webber at the time was leading the race and following the accident ended up in the 3rd place. Vettel though crashed out right
then. Webber reflecting back on that did say that he could have been further in front, if Vettel had shown some more maturity.
Webber said: "It's nice that I have a little buffer at the top of the points right now and I am glad of that, but we still have to go out and give it all we've got.
Lasts season it was the other Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel who won at Suzuka circuit in Japan, Webber could only finish in 17thafter a crash in practice.
