Mark Webber discards rumours of holding up for Sebastian Vettel during Monaco GP – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has dismissed all the rumours that he was trying to help his teammate, Sebastian Vettel during 2012 Monaco Grand Prix held at Circuit de Monaco on May 27.
The Australian driver took an amazing victory in the Monaco GP after starting the race from the pole position. Moreover, he managed his tyres exceptionally well and maintained his lead throughout the race and was able to win for the second time in Monte
Carlo.
There have been many speculations that Webber was trying to hold up the contenders behind him so that Vettel might be able to gain positions towards the end of the race. Nevertheless, he totally discharged all the rumours and called it an absolute nonsense.
“I heard afterwards people had been speculating that I was 'backing up' Nico (Rosberg), Fernando (Alonso) and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who was also behind me, to help my team-mate Sebastian Vettel gain places,” Webber said. “That is absolute rubbish. You
just cannot be that fancy around Monaco.”
He added, “Ultimately, Seb ran out of tyres and he had to pit because the rest of us started to go quicker, but if they'd kept going he would have been pushing for the win. If we had been trying anything on, I could have been even cuter.”
Besides, he said that he is aiming to deliver his best performance in 2012 Canadian GP which is to be held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on June 10.
At present, Red Bull pair of drivers is just three points behind the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 76 points.
Even though, the defending champions struggled during the start of the season with finding the true pace of RB8, nonetheless, they are currently at the top of constructors’ rankings with 146 points and they are 38 points ahead of their main rival, McLaren.
Over and above, they are trying their best to make the significant developments and the necessary preparations in order to improve the pace of their car so as to maintain their lead in the constructors’ championship in the approaching season.
