Mark Webber focussed for Malaysian Grand Prix despite leading practice sessions – Formula 1 news
Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing has said that he is not getting carried away after scoring the fastest times of the Friday test sessions of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Instead, he is focussed about the upcoming race in Sepang and is hoping for the best possible results for his team.
“We look okay, but it's still early days in a race weekend. We got some dry running in and the car performed well. It was reliable, which is always a nice bonus. We got to check all the tyres - including the new tyre that Pirelli brought here. It's very
hot,” said Webber.
Mark topped the timesheets of both of the practice sessions but not by a big margin. McLaren followed his Red Bull in the timesheets during both of the sessions with Lewis Hamilton in 2nd place during the first session while Jenson Button finished
behind the Australian during the second practice session.
Webber was pleased that his team managed to complete a sufficient amount of laps using the “super-hard” tyres introduced by Pirelli. He is hoping to score the best possible results for his team at the qualifying session on Saturday for the Malaysian GP.
He believes that the team should evaluate the data achieved during these test sessions and come up with the best possible strategy for the upcoming race.
On the other hand, his teammate Sebastian Vettel indicated that the only concern for the team would be the degradation of the new Pirelli tyres as it is still quite unpredictable because of the intense heat expected on the race day on Sunday. However, he
is confident that his team has the best car on the grid for this weekend’s race.
“We completed quite a lot of laps this morning because of the extra tyres - and this afternoon we did more or less what was planned. We didn't have any big problems, but we got a lot of mileage and took a lot of things onboard. Obviously tyre wear is different
here to Melbourne,” said Vettel.
He thinks that the tyre degradation is going to affect all of the teams and not only Red Bull.
Red Bull ran the Kinetic Energy Recovery System during the Friday practice sessions for the first time but they are expected to make their decision about using the System for the Malaysian GP soon.
