Mark Webber insists that 20 F1 races in a year are too much – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber has stated that 20 F1 races in a season are more than enough and it makes the season difficult for the drivers.
“We’re on the limit. People talk about NASCAR (with 36 rounds in 2012), but it’s all in one country,” Webber told. “As well as travelling, we need to be fit from the first week of February until the last in November. It’s part of being a professional and
I understand that. I’m not crying. But it’s difficult for everyone. In the past we had 16 races, but more tests. On the other hand, there were ten races in Europe. Now there is almost no testing but very little (racing) in Europe, and a lot in very faraway
places.”
The Australian driver added that their work in the simulator should also not be ignored. He said that 18 races in a season will be better and there should be more races in Europe.
Shortly after the end of the 2012 F1 season, Webber arrived in Australia to attend his Tasmania Challenge in which famous sportsmen from the world participate in adventure challenges. The event is used to collect money for various Australian charities.
Webber has recently had a leg surgery to repair the damage he suffered due to a downhill mountain cycling accident. This latest surgery was performed to remove pieces of metal inserted earlier for recovery.
The driver had a great chance of winning the F1 championship in the beginning of the 2012 F1 season. He was trailing Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso by 40 points ahead of the Belgian GP. However, his teammate Sebastian Vettel replaced him for that later on. Webber
has confessed that his decision for not settling for a top six finish greatly hindered his chances at winning. He won two Grands Prix this season; one in Monaco and the other in Great Britain. He has stated that his Monaco win was certainly very special to
him and he needs to keep winning which he is capable of.
Red Bull won the constructors’ title for the third time in a row as result of Webber’s and Vettel’s collective race points.
