Mark Webber never expected to pass Fernando Alonso in the British GP – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has said that he never expected to pass Fernando Alonso of Ferrari during the ending laps of 2012 British Grand Prix held at Silverstone Circuit on July 8.
Alonso claimed an amazing pole position for the British GP and completely dominated the race during the first 47 laps. However, he struggled with an issue of tyre degradation due to which he lost his lead to Webber in the 48th lap and the Aussie
eventually won the race.
Afterwards, the Australian driver expressed that he is very much surprised about his victory in the last race as he never believed that he would be able to overtake the Spaniard towards the end.
“Fernando looked very good in the first two stints and I was surprised at how his options went off,” he said. “The Ferrari is generally very good on that type of compound, but it just goes to show you should never give up.
He added, “I thought he was just playing with me a little bit at the start of that last stint, thinking he had the range and that he could go quite slowly after the stop and then pick up the pace if I arrived. But he couldn't react, I smelt blood and got
the move done”.
Currently, he is at second position in the drivers’ rankings with 116 points. In addition, he is 16 points ahead of his teammate, Sebastian Vettel and is 13 points behind the leading driver, Alonso.
Furthermore, he has been deemed as one of the most favourite contenders in this year’s championship. Besides, he has delivered many incredible performances in the season so far and has emerged as second driver who has scored two race wins.
It will be important to mention that he has been one of the most consistent drivers in the season until now and it will be interesting to see how he comes up in the forthcoming races.
Meanwhile, the defending champions are at the top of constructors’ standings with 216 points and are 64 points ahead of their main rival, Ferrari. Over and above, they are trying to make the significant advancements for the approaching races in order to
defend their title.
