Mark Webber not bothered with Vettel’s 'superstar' status
The Red Bull driver, Mark Webber proclaimed that he is not at all scared by the 'superstar' status of his teammate, Sebastian Vettel. He insisted that he has stood at the top of the Drivers’ Championship and the stats speak for him now.
The Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has admitted several times publically that Vettel is the young team driver and Red Bull hopes to make a strong team around him for future. The German initially drove for the other Red Bull owned team called Toro
Rosso and was picked up by Red Bull Racing only last year. After spending two years with Toro Rosso i.e. 2007 and 2008, the driver was able to make his mark in the sport and the Red Bull team was happy to embrace the driver. The driver wrapped last year at
second place behind the 2009 champion, Jenson Button. This year has also been a good one for the driver as he now stands at 4th place in the points’ tally with his 206 points.
On the other hand, Webber, who has turned 34 now, stands at second place in the charts with 220 points and has been able to win 4 races so far this season.
The fact could not be ignored that Vettel who is only 23 so far and has drove with the series only for four seasons, has yet a long way to go, whereas Webber has only a numbered years left in the sport. Moreover, all through his career of eight years with
Formula One, this is the first time that he is fighting the battle for the title so closely.
But dismissing all doubts, the Australian declared that neither he is a second driver for the team nor he is scared of his teammate for the championship.
While talking to the media earlier today Webber proclaimed, "It doesn't bother me at all. I am 34 years old and I think it's great that I'm still at the top level and as competitive as I am. If I was ten years younger and was getting the same results, I'm
sure you'd all think I'm the superstar. I think the only difference is that Vettel is young. I don't really see him working any differently than, say, Heikki (Kovalainen) at Lotus.”
He further continued telling, “I think the best way to judge someone is to consider the consistency of their results.”
Webber presently has a lead of 14 points over his teammate. Moreover, despite of any early statements, the team principal has also denied following any sort of team ordering and has announced equal support to both the drivers.
