Mark Webber not surprised to see Mercedes dominance in Monaco – Formula 1 news
Red Bull’s Mark Webber has claimed that he was not surprised to see Mercedes dominance during the Thursday practice sessions in Monaco. However, he was happy with his own progress too and is looking forward to the qualifiers.
The Australian driver said, “It was one of our better Thursdays of the past few years to be honest. We wanted to get short and long run data, which I think we got. There are some quick cars out there, but no surprises. We’ve seen that on Saturday in the
last few Grand Prix. There are quick guys but all in all it was a smooth day for us.”
It is believed that Mercedes will be strong during the Monaco GP qualifying and their drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg might lock the front row of the grid comfortably. The latter of the two has been in tremendous form and he was the one who topped
both the Thursday sessions.
Despite that, Webber believes that things can change going into the qualifying session. He added, “Last year we were not really in the window [for pole] until the last lap in Q3, so I need to discover that again if I can. You need to be towards the front
here.”
The veteran driver was victorious in Monaco in 2012 and will be hoping to repeat a similar result this year as well. He is currently sixth in the championship and needs to bounce back strongly to catch up with the rest of the drivers.
If he fails to score a victory in Monte Carlo, he will come under immense pressure, so he needs to have a perfect weekend.
On the other hand, Webber’s team-mate Sebastian Vettel will also be looking forward to a positive race, as he is currently leading the championship. He encountered some issues during the Thursday practice sessions, but will be expecting better fortune during
the qualifiers.
It will be interesting to see who locks the front row of the grid in Monte Carlo. Other than the performance of the car, it will be important for the teams to handle the traffic issues. The one who gets stuck behind a slow car might end up losing a lot of
time, which will not be ideal at all.
